Used only to size the weekly time target.

At this stage a reading is romaji. “Unknown words only” needs a vocabulary model from a later phase, so this version uses on demand instead.

Romaji is a temporary scaffold for the earliest lessons.

Uses a Japanese voice already installed on this Mac. Nothing is uploaded.

Local model

No local tutor is connected. Core lessons do not need one.

Privacy

Progress stays in a SQLite file on this computer. KOTO does not record the microphone and does not send answers to a server.

KOTO original beginner notes

Not copied from Japan Foundation textbooks or Irodori. The JF Standard is used only as a framework reference. These notes have not had a separate native-speaker editorial pass.

  • JF Standard — framework reference only. Can-do wording in KOTO is original.
  • JLPT — exam format reference. This version has no JLPT items, and JLPT does not test speaking or writing.
  • ts-fsrs — MIT licensed spaced-repetition scheduler.
